R V Vacation Break

We’ve titled our website EscapingNormalRV.com because it seems that relates to us in what we’ve done by leaving a conventional lifestyle of work and a sticks and bricks house. Not that we haven’t worked, we’re of the retirement age right now, but don’t feel like we’ve retired. A few years ago we started full-time RV living and began traveling and volunteering at different locations. We’ll post more in the future about what Escaping Normal looks like and what it could look like for you. Recently, we Escaped our Normal by leaving the RV for a couple of weeks and spending some vacation time in California. Our niece had her wedding on a San Diego beach so we got to spend time enjoying family and touring the area. We want to share some of that and the beautiful sites with you.

Two days after we arrived in San Diego, we attending the wedding of our niece and new “nephew-in-law”. It was a perfect day for an afternoon bayside wedding with the weather in full cooperation. But, it you’ve ever visited San Diego, you know the weather is usually in full cooperation, except for the occasional hurricane like the one that almost happened in August.

Along with family and a few friends, we were able to take in some of the sites and attractions San Diego has to offer. Just a block or two from where we stayed is the site of the La Jolla Farmers Market with some of the best produce and tasty treats around. We walked down, sampled many offers and took back home a few sacks of goodies.

Del Mar is another community that is part of the greater San Diego area. One of the big attractions in Del Mar is the Del Mar horse races. On another beautiful day, we visited the race track.

Another popular San Diego attraction is the San Diego Zoo. Look at that Welcoming Lion! We were able to spend a few hours at this wonderful place.

Another impressive attraction in San Diego is the cross atop Mount Soledad. Several years ago there was quite a controversary about this cross. Our understanding is the city owned the property and someone from the ACLU didn’t think a cross should be on city property. Most of the citizens disagreed. A campaign was started to save the cross. Funds were raised and the property was purchased. It is now owned by a private organization and is a tribute to U S Veterans.

The cross itself is 29 feet tall with a 12 foot arm spread and it sits on a 43 foot base, making this a cross that can be seen a long ways off. The walls on the walk way around the base of the cross are filled with photographs that have been placed there to honor numerous veterans. And, of course the view atop the mountain is phenenomal.

As impressive as this was, I think the ocean views and the city views overlooking the city are fantastic. Let’s look at some of those pictures.

We did a cave tour where we could look out to the ocean where we saw a kayak guided tour. While we were in the cave, we saw a Sea Lion at his nap time.

The night before our last day in San Diego, we were able to visit a very nice, high end restaurant that overlooked the city of San Diego, with beautiful ocean views and a special dessert for Dave’s birthday. It was absolutely beautiful. And of course, the company was the best. My sister, Cindy and her husband Steve hosted us. Needless to say we had a wonderful time visiting with them and our nieces and their families who we don’t get to see often enough.

Then it was time to head for home.
